Agents use them for two simple reasons. In traditional advertising they are used to conserve space (e.g. in ads on classifieds section of the paper) and to fit in more information on limited size property advertisement. In multiple listing services the databases allow only limited number of characters for describing a property, thus these abbreviations are necessary tools for describing the details of the property advertised.
